How to Set Up a Kindle for a Child

Amazon’s Kindle e-reader device connects to the Internet via Wi-Fi, enabling you to browse websites and access the Amazon bookstore to purchase and download e-books directly to the device. You can also use the Kindle to access backed-up books and other documents that you’ve stored with Amazon’s cloud service. Before you hand a Kindle over to a child, you can set up parental controls to block access to the Internet and prevent children from buying and downloading books with the device.



Instructions

1. Press the Kindle’s “Home” button.

2. Press the “Menu” button, and then press the five-way controller to select “Settings.”


3. Press the controller to select “Set” next to Parental Controls. Options appear for the Kindle Web browser, Kindle Store and Cloud.

4. Press the controller to select “Turn Off” next to Web Browser to prevent your child from using the device to browse websites. Select “Turn Off” next to Kindle Store to keep children from buying and downloading material from the Kindle Store, and select “Turn Off” next to Cloud to bar access to content you’ve backed up on Amazon’s cloud servers.

5. Type in a password of your choosing, and then use the controller to select “Submit” to save the changes.

If you're worried that you might forget the password you used for parental controls, write the password or clues about the password and keep this information in a safe place where children are unlikely to find it.
