The Kindle Fire detects the orientation of the device and automatically changes the screen to accommodate how you're holding the tablet. If the screen doesn't change when you hold the Kindle Fire vertically, you probably have the screen lock option enabled. This option locks the screen to its current orientation, so it won't change when you move the tablet. Disabling the lock enables the device to automatically change orientation again.
Instructions
1. Drag your finger down from the top of the screen to view the quick selection menu.
2. Tap "Locked" at the left to change the option to "Unlocked."
3. Tap the "Home" icon to exit the menu.
4. Turn the Kindle Fire vertically to change the screen orientation.
